Following a meeting between tribal committee members and the police, a case has been registered. Both the administration and the police have pledged to provide compensation of Rs 35 lakh and a job opportunity to the youth’s next of kin.
According to a police spokesperson, a small police team was chasing suspected drug peddlers when they were fired upon in the Mandal area under Satwari Police Station on Thursday evening. A person was injured but later succumbed to their injuries.
On Friday, several tribals staged protests at the deceased youth’s residence, with senior tribal leaders participating. They claimed he was innocent and not involved in drug peddling, raising slogans seeking justice.
Gujjar leader Guftar Choudhary, a member of a ten-member committee set up by the community, stated that they had met top police officers, including the Inspector General (IG). “An FIR has been registered for a thorough investigation into this matter. The administration and police have offered compensation and a job to the family,” he explained.
Choudhary emphasized their goal is to ensure the youth’s innocence, asserting that he was killed in a false encounter. He stated, “We took to the streets to protest this injustice. We want the case, after registering the FIR, to be taken to its logical conclusion.”
He confirmed that the administration has announced Rs 35 lakh in compensation and promised the job would be provided by August 15.
Talib Hussain, another Gujjar leader, clarified that the youth was not involved in drug peddling. “He had no FIR lodged against him in any police station; how can the police label him a drug peddler?” he questioned.
The community maintains that branding any community with drug trafficking is incorrect and unacceptable.
