Acclaim, a U.S.-based video game publisher known for its success in the 1990s with games like Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Turok, NBA Jam, and movie-licensed titles, has resurfaced after filing for bankruptcy in 2004. The company is making a grand return with its own PlayAcclaim showcase series, which will debut on September 10, 2025.
Entitled “A New Era Is Coming,” this showcase aims to feature the publisher’s upcoming lineup of titles while celebrating its unforgettable legacy. Teasers from the press release and a recent teaser trailer hint at Acclaim’s plans for revival.
Acclaim is now led by Alex Josef, previously the CEO of Graffiti Games. In a press release, Josef said:
“We’re not here to chase ghosts. We’re here to take the energy and chaos that made Acclaim unforgettable and channel it into something new. The old screens are cracking, and what’s coming through is something exciting and different. You can’t rewrite the past, but you can build upon it. This is about owning our story and moving it into a future that feels bold, energetic, and completely fresh.”
Though this new Acclaim won’t be publishing Mortal Kombat games anymore, its contributions to the modern video game landscape will be intriguing. For fans of the games Acclaim once published, there might be some beloved series making a return.
We’ll have to wait two weeks from now to see what Josef and his team have in store.
