According to AMD’s executive, the upcoming Instinct MI450 AI lineup will be a ‘decisive’ release that levels the playing field against NVIDIA in the AI market.
AMD Wants to Ensure an Optimal Software Stack Before the Instinct MI450 Release, Competing with NVIDIA Aggressively
For months, AMD has been competing aggressively with NVIDIA. This is partly due to the company’s rapid improvements in both hardware and software. At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Technology Conference, AMD’s EVP of Data Center Solutions Forrest Norrod expressed massive optimism about the upcoming Instinct MI450 AI lineup, stating that customers won’t have ‘second thoughts’ adopting the new hardware over NVIDIA.
We’ve focused on getting there in the 450s so that for training, there’s no excuses or impediments. There’s no hesitation of whether I’ll be behind if I go with AMD in this generation.
A little bit behind in terms of time to introduction for training. And that’s been the thing that has slowed us down on the training progression. We recognize that fairly early.
Norrod claims that the Instinct MI450 AI lineup will be AMD’s ‘Milan moment’, referring to a significant generational leap in EPYC server CPUs. This means the MI450 is expected to target NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin architecture, with Team Red eager to dominate every aspect of the AI industry. Whether through optimizing ROCm or bringing hardware advancements, AMD aims to match NVIDIA in customer adoption.

The MI450 lineup is expected to integrate HBM4 and offer up to 432 GB of memory, bringing significant bandwidth improvements. Additionally, AMD plans to expand its rack-scale options with the MI400 series, including the highly anticipated Helios rack. This new rack is claimed to rival Vera Rubin’s top configuration in terms of on-paper specifications.
Overall, AMD aims to elevate its AI offerings to a whole new level with next-gen lineups.
