Today, Apple has released iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1 for all compatible iPhone and Apple Watch devices. These updates mark the return of Blood Oxygen Monitoring in the United States, a feature that was previously disabled due to a patent dispute with Masimo.

### Apple’s Latest Update: Restores Blood Oxygen Monitoring

If you have a compatible device, you can download and install the latest version right now through the Settings app. Since it is a final build, not a beta, you do not need a developer account. Simply navigate to **General > Software Update** and follow the on-screen instructions.

For Apple Watch users, launch the dedicated Watch app on your iPhone, go to **General > Software Update**, and follow the instructions. Ensure that your Apple Watch has over 50% battery life and is connected to a power source before updating. Additionally, your Apple Watch must be within range of your iPhone for the update to proceed.

### Blood Oxygen Monitoring Mechanics

Apple initially disabled the Blood Oxygen Monitoring feature on U.S. devices in 2024 due to a patent issue with Masimo. However, this time, the mechanics are slightly different. Although technically not available on the Apple Watch, the device will take blood oxygen readings and send the data to your paired iPhone. The phone processes the information, and you can check the readings under the **Respiratory** section of the Health app.
