Apple continuously enhances safety features on its devices, which have saved countless lives in recent years. One such instance involved 16-year-old Lindsay Leskovac, who fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into poles and trees. Trapped inside with multiple fractures, including serious injuries to her legs and cervical spine, Lindsay’s iPhone became her lifeline.
Upon detecting the severe impact of the crash, the Crash Detection feature on Lindsay’s iPhone automatically dialed 911, summoning emergency responders immediately. Her mother, Laura, later revealed that she was unaware her daughter’s device could perform this action, which left her stunned.
The fire and rescue personnel informed Laura that the call came from her daughter’s phone, with a dispatcher speaking to Lindsay for 22 minutes. This technology allowed rescuers to locate her quickly when she was unable to call for help herself, emphasizing the importance of those initial moments in emergency situations.
Crash Detection is available on iPhone 14 and newer models running iOS 16 or later. For those with an Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), or Apple Watch Ultra with watchOS 9 or newer, there’s also the option to enable this feature. Lindsay’s near-fatal accident turned into a story of survival thanks to this technology, highlighting how even small device settings can be crucial in saving lives.
