Apple’s iPhone 18 series is expected to include the company’s first foldable smartphone, with various design elements planned to distinguish it from competitors. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously indicated that the foldable iPhone will not feature Face ID and instead will rely on a side-mounted Touch ID sensor for authentication purposes. This prediction has remained unchanged despite rumors suggesting the inclusion of an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Prior to the foldable iPhone’s launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, numerous rumors will circulate about its features, but Kuo remains convinced that the device will not have any Face ID hardware. His previous prediction, made six months ago, suggested a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, and his steadfastness on this point suggests he might be correct. According to Kuo, Luxshare, an Apple supplier, will provide the specific component.

The absence of an in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor could be due to accuracy issues. Biometric sensors often fail to authenticate if there is a barrier on the finger, such as a glove or water, leading to frustrating experiences. Additionally, the foldable iPhone is rumored to have a book-style form factor like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, which would require two displays instead of one. This necessitates two fingerprint sensors rather than one, making the side-mounted Touch ID sensor a more practical choice.

Furthermore, Apple has been integrating its Touch ID sensors into existing products such as the iPad Air for years. Given this established supply chain, procuring the component for the foldable iPhone would be less costly compared to setting up an entire production line for the under-display fingerprint sensor.
