Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Air, a device that redefines the company’s design ambitions with its ultra-thin form factor and new durable materials. Design chief Alan Dye described it as “another step toward the singular piece of glass Steve Jobs envisioned years ago,” positioning the device as both a technological achievement and a symbolic milestone.
Apple’s iPhone Air Delivers an Ultra-Thin 5.6mm Design with Ceramic Shield 2, Moving Closer to Steve Jobs’ Glass Vision
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s software design chief, Alan Dye, stated that the iPhone Air is another step toward the “single piece of glass” iPhone which Steve Jobs envisioned. The vision of a seamless, all-screen device has been a long-standing goal since the early iPhone era, and the iPhone Air appears to be the closest yet.
The iPhone Air boasts an ultra-thin design at just 5.6mm, setting a new record for Apple’s slimmest phone ever—thinner than even the iPhone 6, which later became infamous in Bendgate incidents. The device is built around a polished titanium frame and protected on both sides with Ceramic Shield 2, which offers three times better scratch resistance and four times better protection against cracks. This combination results in a phone that not only looks futuristic but also promises enhanced durability.
What makes the iPhone Air particularly exciting is its implications for future designs. Previously reported rumors suggest an upcoming “Glasswing” iPhone set to be released in 2027, which could further push the concept with curved glass edges, slimmer bezels, and possibly no display cutout at all. If true, it might finally bring Steve Jobs’ original plans to life—creating an iPhone that looks and feels like a single sheet of glass.
For now, the iPhone Air is already generating significant buzz, with preorders set to begin on September 12 and the official launch scheduled for September 19. Real-world tests will reveal how the device performs once it’s in users’ hands. We will keep you updated on the latest developments.
