On September 9, Apple is set to unveil four new iPhone 17 models as part of its grand keynote event. The company will also introduce two new chipsets for these devices: the A19 and A19 Pro. Both SoCs are expected to be manufactured on TSMC’s latest 3nm ‘N3P’ process, offering small performance and efficiency improvements over the previous-generation A18 and A18 Pro.
However, there is confusion regarding which iPhone 17 model will receive each chipset. Here’s a breakdown:
– **The Base iPhone 17**: It may not be equipped with either the A19 or A19 Pro. Instead, it will reportedly come with an updated version of the A18 SoC and will lack the expected 12GB RAM upgrade found in the other three models.
– **iPhone 17 (Pro and Pro Max)**: These devices are expected to feature the more powerful A19 and A19 Pro chipsets, respectively. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to include a vapor chamber for better sustained performance when running intensive tasks like games.
– **iPhone 17 Air**: This model may come as a surprise, with reports suggesting it will also be powered by the A19 Pro. However, instead of a 6-core GPU found in higher-binned versions, the iPhone 17 Air would have a 5-core GPU, which could lead to a graphics downgrade but better performance compared to the base model.
These new chipsets are expected to address temperature issues and deliver improved compute capabilities. We will know more details during Apple’s September keynote event.
