Apple is set to expand its spatial computing lineup with the upcoming Vision Air headset, which is expected to launch in 2027. Designed as a lighter and more affordable alternative to the Vision Pro, this new device aims to offer a slimmer design, lower price tag, and iPhone-class performance, making Apple’s mixed reality technology accessible to a broader audience. Currently, the Vision Pro retails at $3,499, meaning that many consumers are priced out of this market.

With the Vision Air, Apple plans to bring more versatility to its mixed-reality platform. The new headset is expected to weigh over 40 percent less than the Vision Pro, making it significantly lighter at around a pound. This would be one of the most significant changes since the Vision Pro’s launch, addressing user complaints about weight, especially during extended use.

According to prominent industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is targeting affordability with the Vision Air. The device could cost up to 50 percent less than the Vision Pro, potentially starting at $1,750. This price point brings it closer to that of iPhones and Macs, making it a more realistic option for consumers.

To reduce costs and improve design, Apple is expected to shift from glass to plastic components, use magnesium alloy instead of titanium for the frame, and streamline the sensor array. These changes will not only lower manufacturing costs but also reduce the weight, resulting in a more comfortable form factor.

Another cost-saving measure involves switching from Mac’s M-series chips to iPhone’s A-series chips for the Vision Air. The iPhone-grade processor will ensure competitive performance while balancing efficiency and cost. Notably, the latest A-series chips are on par with older M-branded chips in terms of performance. If the Vision Air launches in 2027, it is likely to feature an A21 chip based on TSMC’s 2nm process for enhanced computational and graphical output while being more power-efficient.

Mass production of the Vision Air is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027. This timing suggests that Apple could announce the device by the end of the year, possibly alongside new OLED MacBook Pro models.
