ASUS has recently entered the market with its A620A chipset motherboards, following in the footsteps of Biostar and GIGABYTE. These new boards are part of the PRIME and TUF series, offering similar specifications to their A620 counterparts.
The A620A chipset is a simplified version of the A620, using Promontory 19 silicon instead of Promontory 21. The key difference lies in the uplink speed: while the A620 uses PCIe 4.0 x4, the A620A relies on PCIe 3.0 x4, resulting in half the bandwidth and making it less convenient for heavy I/O usage.
Not all motherboard manufacturers use the A620A due to its lower cost compared to the A620. Biostar and GIGABYTE were previously the only ones with A620A models, but ASUS has now joined them, releasing six new models in their PRIME and TUF series. These motherboards support Zen 4 and Zen 5 CPUs (Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series), making them ideal for budget builds.
Key differences include faster USB Type A ports on the newer boards. All models are entry-level platforms for Ryzen processors, offering decent performance without CPU overclocking capabilities. The TUF Gaming A620AM-Plus and A620AM-Plus WiFi feature Wi-Fi support, while PRIME A620AM-A-CSM, PRIME A620AM-A, PRIME A620AM-K-CSM, and PRIME A620AM-K are the base models.
The motherboards now support higher RAM capacity, with up to 128 GB or 256 GB DDR5 in the newer A620A variants. Some visible changes include a different orientation of expansion slots and fewer PCIe x1 slots on some boards, which allows for faster USB ports.
Prices and availability are uncertain, but similar pricing is expected for these models.
