The confrontation took place at a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting where Bondi faced scrutiny over the Jeffrey Epstein files. Republicans praised her for upholding President Trump’s promises to rid the Justice Department of partisan politics and reduce crime.
Democrats, however, accused Bondi of doing exactly the opposite. They said she gutted key elements of the Justice Department, including its public corruption unit, and launched groundless investigations into Trump’s political foes while covering up for alleged Trump allies involved in criminal wrongdoing.
In response to Democrats’ questions, a combative Bondi often hurled insults and counter-accusations. She called Sen. Adam Schiff “a failed lawyer” and “a liar.” When asked about Epstein’s photos allegedly showing President Trump with young women, she accused Durbin of undermining an earlier probe into Epstein.
Bondi also accused 77-year-old Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono of consorting with antifa protesters. She interrupted Sen. Richard Blumenthal by saying, “I’m not going to be lectured about integrity by someone who lied about being in the military just to get elected.”
After the hearing, Durbin stated that her reaction was “completely out of line” and her refusal to answer basic questions left a bad impression. Bondi has emerged as perhaps the most openly political and partisan attorney general in modern American history.
Trump supporters praised Bondi’s performance on social media, sharing video soundbites of her exchanges and facial expressions.
