Three detainees at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility were shot on September 24, killing one, in what authorities called a targeted attack on law enforcement. The shooter also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound near unspent shell casings with “ANTI-ICE” written on them.
The shooting occurred around 6:40 a.m. when the suspect fired from a nearby rooftop. FBI Director Kash Patel alleged that evidence showed high levels of pre-attack planning and a desire to instill terror in ICE agents. This incident has sparked debates over political rhetoric and violence, following another killing earlier this month.
The shooter allegedly downloaded documents containing lists of Department of Homeland Security facilities, searched for apps tracking the presence of ICE agents, sought information on ballistics, and reviewed video footage related to Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Investigators also recovered a handwritten note expressing hope that the attack would instill real terror in ICE agents.
Thirty-eight police units responded to the call at 8100 N. Stemmons Freeway, where the local ICE facility is located. Three detainees were shot; one died and two are critically injured. Among the victims was a Mexican national who sustained serious injuries.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that evidence indicated an ideological motive behind the attack. The shooter’s electronic devices and other items from his home revealed writings and search history consistent with these findings.
Government officials condemned violence against ICE, emphasizing that such attacks must stop. This incident is one of several recent instances of targeted violence against the immigration agency.
Republican leaders like Vice President JD Vance have linked liberal rhetoric to violent attacks. A study by the libertarian think tank Cato Institute found that terrorists motivated by extreme right-leaning ideology killed six times more people than those on the opposite side between 1975 and September 10, this year.
The Dallas ICE facility has been under increased security measures following these events.
