AI firms have breached user privacy by allowing individuals to access chats through Google Search. Despite efforts to resolve this, the issue persists.
ChatGPT’s Conversations Can Be Accessed Through the Wayback Machine
For those unaware, recent internet discoveries reveal that over 100,000 AI conversations from different users can be easily accessed via a simple Google Search. According to OpenAI, the firm is working to de-index these chats, but many are still accessible through Archive.org’s Wayback Machine. This has raised significant concerns for both those who experienced privacy compromises and OpenAI itself.
When the Wayback Machine inquired about OpenAI’s actions regarding removal requests, Director Mark Graham stated that no one from the AI firm had requested URL exclusions for “chatgpt.com/share” URLs. He noted, “We have not received or honored any (large scale) requests for URL exclusion of ‘chatgpt.com/share’ URLs.” If OpenAI, as the rights holder, had asked to exclude specific URLs, they likely would have done so.
The Wayback Machine saves every publicly accessible page on the Internet through “snapshots” with time-stamped versions. Even if OpenAI deletes these pages from Google, individuals can still access them since no removal requests have been made yet. This means that anyone familiar with Archive.org can still view chats, although not all are interesting; some were quite wild.
At the time of writing, Grok’s chats are accessible on Google Search, indicating a broader issue with mainstream AI models used by consumers. This highlights privacy concerns and underscores the potential for these conversations to be used in legal matters.
You should be more cautious about what you share with chatbots over the internet due to these privacy risks and potential legal implications.
