Google’s Pixel 10 Requires 3GB RAM for AI: What’s Left for Apps?

The Pixel 10 has improved its specs compared to the previous year, with Google introducing its first Tensor G5 chip using 3nm technology. However, the base model still ships with 12GB of RAM. To uncover more details about this new flagship series, users might have noticed that only 9GB of RAM can be used for daily activities on the Pixel 10. This is because Google has allocated 3GB specifically for AI-related operations.

The Pixel 10’s approach to AI is more aggressive than what was seen with the Pixel 9. On the Pixel 9, all applications had access to the full 12GB of RAM, with the operating system dynamically loading the necessary amount into the AI model as needed. In contrast, for the Pixel 10, Google has set aside a fixed 3GB of RAM for the Tensor NPU and AICore.

This change aims to reduce delays when using Google’s AI features by ensuring they are instantly available. However, this means fewer apps can run in the background simultaneously. If you prefer not to upgrade to the Pixel 10 Pro with its 16GB of RAM, the base model’s 9GB should suffice for most users.

For power users who appreciate more memory flexibility, the Pixel 10 Pro or Pro XL is recommended. Purchasing either model will grant a $200 gift card with no extra cost.
