The Palestinian militant group Hamas stated on Friday that it agrees to release all Israeli hostages, alive or dead, under the terms of President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. Reuters reported that Hamas is now ready to enter mediated negotiations to discuss the details.
Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were the first to agree to the White House peace proposal. The plan demands that Hamas disarm and have no role in governing the Gaza Strip. It does not explicitly address the idea of a future Palestinian state, which Netanyahu has seemingly ruled out.
Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. In response, Israel initiated a military operation in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of over 65,000 Palestinians according to Hamas’s health ministry. However, Israel maintains that these numbers are not reliable.
Israel believes that Hamas is still holding 48 hostages, with 20 thought to be alive.
