In a unique start to his ruling against President Donald Trump’s administration on September 30, U.S. District Court Judge William Young included a scanned handwritten note sent to his office. The note read: “Trump has pardons and tanks – what do you have?” At the top of Young’s opinion in AAUP v. Rubio, which ruled that Trump’s effort to deport foreign-born student protesters was unconstitutional.

Intel appears to be adding early support for the AVX 10.2 “512-bit” instruction set for its upcoming Xeon “Diamond Rapids” and Core “Nova Lake” processors.

Future Intel Core Desktop “Nova Lake” & Xeon Server “Diamond Rapids” CPUs to Enable AVX 10.2 “512-bit” Support, Xe3 GPUs See Improved Performance

In the latest oneDNN patch v3.9-rc release, Intel has introduced numerous improvements and additions for its processor and graphics families. Some of these are yet to be released, but the company is working to have initial support ready. The latest patch provides insights into what we can expect from future lineups.

AVX-512 enables 512-bit vector operations, enhancing performance in certain applications and workloads. This technology was last supported on Intel’s Rocket Lake CPUs, which were not included in the previous generation (Comet Lake) or the subsequent generation (Alder Lake). The move was made because newer processors featured two different core architectures: P-Cores that supported AVX-512 instructions, but E-Cores that did not.

Around Raptor Lake’s launch, rumors suggested Intel would reintroduce AVX-512 support. The new AVX10 ISA, particularly the AVX 10.2 ISA, was seen as a key point for this reintroduction, and early support indicates AVX-512 is coming back to Intel’s CPUs.

The new patch not only reveals support for AVX 10.2’s 512-bit instructions on future Core “Desktop” CPUs but also on future Xeon “Server” CPUs. While no explicit name was mentioned, it’s likely that the Core family will be Nova Lake and the Xeon family Diamond Rapids.

Intel’s Nova Lake CPU lineup uses a hybrid core architecture with Coyote Cove P-Cores and Arctic Wolf E-Cores. With AVX 10.2 ISA support, it is expected to bring back AVX-512 capabilities. Coral Rapids will be the first Xeon family to reintroduce simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) support.

Another new addition in the patch mentions Xe3 graphics architecture. The new patch offers improved performance on Intel GPUs based on the Xe3 architecture. Panther Lake CPUs will use Xe3 as an integrated GPU, and there’s strong belief that “Celestial” will be offered as a discrete product.

Bringing back AVX-512 support along with SMT will be significant for Intel, as AMD offers both in efficient ways that have received positive feedback from consumers. While Intel has lagged behind, it can return to form by reintroducing stronger product families and support.
