Team Cherry, the developers behind Hollow Knight and its sequel, Silksong, has finally announced a release date. During this interview, the studio confirmed that they are already working on DLC for Silksong. The team discussed why it took them so long to complete the game, with co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen stating, “We’ve been having fun. This whole thing is just a vehicle for our creativity anyway. It’s nice to make fun things.”
Gibson elaborated that the development process was not complicated but rather slow due to continuous additions to the game. The team never faced significant roadblocks; instead, they kept expanding the game, leading to its six-year development period.
“Even at that point we were recognizing that it was going to become another giant thing to rival the scale of Hollow Knight or probably exceed it,” said Gibson. “And then because of how we work, obviously the world ended up being just as big or bigger. And the quest system existed. And the multiple towns existed. Suddenly you end up six, seven years later.”
Team Cherry’s success with Hollow Knight, which has sold over 15 million copies since its release in 2017, allowed them to maintain a small team for an extended period. Gibson and Pellen admitted that they were only launching Silksong “for the sake of just completing the game.”
The last two years of development focused on polishing and bug fixing. Despite initial delays, Gibson and Pellen believed they would have released it sooner if not for their need to ensure everything met their high standards.
Bloomberg’s report highlights how Team Cherry remains excited about Silksong after six years. They already have DLC in the works but kept quiet to avoid “souring” any excitement around the game.
Silksong will be available on PC, current and last-gen consoles on September 4, 2025.
