The introduction of improved 3nm smartphone chipsets should enhance efficiency, leading to better battery life. However, the advancement in this specific area is moving at a snail’s pace compared to the rapid adoption of silicon-carbon technology by Chinese companies. This means that newer devices with these cells can boast significantly extended ‘screen-on’ time without manufacturers needing to worry about thickness issues.
Some phone makers are pushing technological boundaries, with HONOR rumored to be testing a smartphone with a 10,000mAh battery capacity. If released, this would surpass the screen-on times of Android-powered tablets. When silicon-carbon technology first emerged, capacities in the 6,000mAh to 6,500mAh range became common. Some manufacturers even experimented with products featuring massive 7,000mAh and 7,500mAh batteries.
According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, HONOR is working towards the upper limit of silicon-carbon technology by developing a handset with a 10,000mAh battery cell. However, before you get too excited, it will likely be a mid-range device equipped with MediaTek’s Dimensity 8500 processor, not the flagship Dimensity 9500. The Dimensity 8500 is expected to be mass-produced on TSMC’s 4nm N4P process and will feature eight Cortex-A725 cores along with a Mali-G720 GPU.
The product is currently in the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase, meaning it is still in concept stages. Therefore, we can expect some time before the device materializes. This detail suggests that HONOR might not stick to the 10,000mAh capacity mentioned in the rumor but remains optimistic about future developments.
The inclusion of a chipset like the Dimensity 8500 instead of the flagship Dimensity 9500 hints at several compromises, such as increased thickness, fewer cameras, a lower-tier display, and other cost-cutting measures. Despite silicon-carbon technology’s benefits, increasing battery capacity will inevitably make components thicker, though less so than lithium-ion counterparts.
These experiments are encouraging companies to think creatively when offering upgrades to customers. Since one of the biggest challenges for smartphones is delivering excellent battery life, HONOR expects to address this major pain point with a future release.
