In a unique start to his ruling against President Donald Trump’s administration on September 30, U.S. District Court Judge William Young included a scanned handwritten note sent to his office. The note read: “Trump has pardons and tanks – what do you have?” At the top of Young’s opinion in AAUP v. Rubio, which ruled that Trump’s effort to deport foreign-born student protesters was unconstitutional.

One person was killed and two others were injured when shots were fired at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, around 6:40 a.m. local time. According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to calls and determined that a shooter had fired from an adjacent building. The suspected shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as stated by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Further information is expected at a news conference later in the day. The shooting occurred at the ICE field office located at 8101 North Stemmons Freeway. Traffic cameras from the Texas Department of Transportation showed heavy law enforcement presence around the facility as of about 7:35 a.m. local time.

This incident comes amid a series of violence at ICE facilities. In July, an ICE facility near Dallas-Fort Worth was attacked in a shooting that wounded a local police officer. Federal officials say a “violent group” launched a coordinated attack on the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, firing dozens of rounds and striking an officer’s neck. Over 10 people have been charged in connection with this incident.

ICE facilities nationwide have experienced protests turning violent at times, resulting in clashes between federal officers and demonstrators. White House officials report a 700% increase in assaults on immigration agents amid the Trump administration’s expansive deportation campaign.

Last month, the Dallas ICE field office issued a shelter-in-place order due to a bomb threat. On August 25, a man approached the building, claiming to have an explosive device and showing what he said was a “detonator” on his wrist. A bomb squad was dispatched, and local law enforcement arrested suspect Bratton Dean Wilkinson.

The two injured were taken to hospitals; one died at the scene. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin of ICE’s parent agency stated that detainees were among the victims, but it is unclear if local law enforcement or security staff were also harmed.

Government officials expressed concern over attacks against immigration agencies and called for an end to such violence. Noem said, “While we don’t know the motive yet, our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence. It must stop.” Vice President JD Vance prayed for those hurt in the attack and their families. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, stated that he was aware of the incident and closely monitoring the situation.

Police cars and ambulances were seen outside the facility where the shooting took place.
