Before Apple’s official unveiling of the iPhone 17 series at its ‘Awe Dropping’ event, various claims about the upcoming iPhone 18 lineup were circulating. According to a tipster, the display sizes for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will remain unchanged from their direct predecessors. However, there’s an anticipated small design change involving a more transparent rear glass.
The tipster Digital Chat Station has previously mentioned on Weibo that both handsets could feature a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display size, respectively. There was also speculation about the possibility of punch-hole cutouts instead of pill-shaped ones, indicating a shift in design. Now, based on the latest post on the micro-blogging platform, next year’s flagships will share many attributes with the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, such as the rear rectangular bump. But a slightly transparent back could be new to the iPhone 18 Pro.
This aesthetic shift has been experimented with by some of Apple’s Android smartphone rivals previously, allowing users to see components from the back. For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, this change might make the MagSafe charging coils more prominent. However, it’s worth noting that such changes have existed as third-party customization options for years, and considering Apple’s design practices, this is not a significant deviation from their standards.
The tipster also mentioned a stainless steel vapor chamber for the newer models, which would be introduced for the first time in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. While different manufacturers have traditionally used copper due to its excellent heat conductivity, there’s no clear reason why Apple chose stainless steel instead. If Apple aims to use this material as a backplate for increased structural integrity, it’s unclear why they couldn’t achieve the same goal with copper.
While Digital Chat Station has been accurate in the past, his claims are not definitive. The information he received is likely from early design prototypes that Apple is testing. Therefore, the actual iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units entering full-scale production could be significantly different. As always, we will provide updates as they become available.
