Marine scientists estimate that, on average, every minute the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic waste enters the world’s oceans, harming marine wildlife and threatening entire ecosystems. There are also growing human health concerns related to exposure to microplastics and harmful chemical components in some plastics.

Three years ago, world leaders at the United Nations Environment Assembly pledged to address this issue with a historic resolution aimed at forging an international agreement on plastic waste from production through disposal and recycling.

The U.N.’s goal was to finalize a treaty by 2024. However, recent talks ended in deadlock between wealthy nations that produce plastics and developing countries that often bear the brunt of plastic waste. Next month, negotiators will gather in Geneva for another attempt to reach an agreement on a global plastic treaty.
