LeFay joined Bethesda Softworks shortly after its founding and became known for his work on the Elder Scrolls franchise. He was credited as a programmer on “Arena,” a director and designer on “Daggerfall,” and a designer on “Battlespire.” Before leaving in 1998, he also contributed to “Morrowind” as a contractor.
In 2019, LeFay co-founded OnceLost Games with fellow Elder Scrolls creators Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman. Together, they developed The Wayward Realms, which was inspired by the second Elder Scrolls game, “Daggerfall.” LeFay hoped to create an even more expansive world using advancements in procedural generation.
OnceLost Games announced that Julian had kept working on the project until recently and expressed their commitment to fulfilling his vision. In a public statement, they wrote:
“Throughout his courageous battle with cancer, Julian never wavered in his passion for The Wayward Realms. Even during his illness, he continued to share his vision with our team, mentor our developers, and ensure that every aspect of the game reflected his commitment to creating something truly extraordinary. His strength, determination, and unwavering focus inspire us all.”

The Wayward Realms was funded with over $800,000 on Kickstarter and is available for wishlist on Steam.
