The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that it would form a bench to hear Justice Yashwant Varma’s plea. Varma, currently at the Allahabad High Court, is challenging an internal inquiry panel report that found him guilty of misconduct. Additionally, his petition contests the May 8 recommendation by former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who suggested initiating impeachment proceedings against him.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal presented the matter before Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and Joymalya Bagchi, requesting urgent listing. Varma’s petition argues that the inquiry was biased, with the burden of proof reversed and timelines manipulated to expedite conclusions at the expense of procedural fairness. The controversial report, which has prompted calls for impeachment, alleges control over premises where significant, suspicious findings were made.
