Abrego Garcia returned to Baltimore after being released from criminal detention in Tennessee and was quickly surrounded by supporters upon his arrival at the ICE office. His lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, stated that Abrego Garcia was detained following a report for an interview. U.S. officials have offered to deport him to Costa Rica if he pleads guilty to transporting migrants living illegally in the U.S., according to his lawyers.
Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty and is currently in plea discussions with the government to avoid deportation to Uganda, which his lawyers consider more dangerous than Costa Rica.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem blamed “activist liberal judges” for blocking efforts to remove people living illegally who were suspected of committing crimes. She emphasized that Abrego Garcia must face justice and be removed from America.
Abrego Garcia is a sheetmetal worker in suburban Washington, D.C., and became the face of Trump’s controversial deportation tactics after entering the country illegally around 2012 as a teenager. Immigration officials cited credible fears of persecution by gangs in El Salvador when refusing to release him back to his home country.
