Meta is set to launch its first pair of smart glasses with a built-in display next month. Reports confirm that the company plans to release these glasses at a surprisingly low price point, dropping from the previously expected $1,000+ to starting at $800. This reduction in price is aimed at securing an early position in the market before competitors introduce their own versions. By cutting margins and setting a lower entry point, Meta hopes to attract early adopters and drive demand.
The shift in pricing reflects Meta’s strategy of appealing to enthusiasts who want access to augmented reality without spending thousands of dollars. At $1,000, the glasses might have been seen as a niche luxury product; now, they are more accessible, serving as an alternative to high-end smartwatches, iPads, and even some entry-level laptops.
Meta’s upcoming smart glasses are internally codenamed “Hypernova.” They will feature a small display overlay that allows users to view notifications, Maps, and mini apps directly in their field of vision. Additionally, the glasses will include a neural wristband accessory, which Meta has been developing for years. This makes them more advanced than current collaborations with Ray-Ban and Oakley, which have AI assistants and cameras but no display overlay.
The $800 price tag is part of Meta’s broader strategy in the wearable tech market. The company has already released its Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, priced between $399 and $499, and continues to expand and refine the Ray-Ban line. By keeping prices low, Meta aims to bridge the gap towards a full AR headset without the bulky design of the Apple Vision Pro. Additionally, selling in meaningful numbers will help these smart glasses become mainstream products.
