The Grand Blanc Township Police Department posted on Facebook shortly after 11 a.m. that there were “multiple” victims at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The shooter was down and the building was on fire.
Police stated: “There are multiple victims and the shooter is down” at the church. “There is NO threat to the public at this time. The church is actively on fire. For people on site, the reunification site is the pavilion to the north. Offsite reunification will be at Trillium Theater on Holly and McCandlish. PLEASE AVOID THE AREA!”
Grand Blanc, a suburb of Flint, Michigan, has about 7,700 residents as of the 2020 census.
Tony Deck, a resident of Grand Blanc, recounted that he heard sirens around 10:15 a.m. and saw smoke coming from the church. He described seeing at least four yellow canvasses over dead bodies. By noon, first responders had blocked off the area.
Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson updated on Facebook: “This is a dynamic scene. The entire church is on fire. The people that were here have been evacuated. We do have victims here, we’re working on that.”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer thanked first responders and monitored the situation in Grand Blanc. She expressed her heartbreak over this incident.
Federal law enforcement officials from the FBI and ATF also responded to the scene. This shooting occurred a day after Russell M. Nelson, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at 101 years old.
