Mysuru has become the first district in Karnataka to complete training of all its Community Health Officers (CHO) in snakebite management, marking a significant step forward in addressing public health concerns that were previously overlooked in the state.
The initiative was carried out by Mysuru District’s Surveillance Unit and the Health and Family Welfare Office. It ran from May 14 to July 23 and involved collaboration with organizations such as Humane World for Animals India and The Liana Trust. The program focused on CHOs based in Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, equipping them to serve as first responders.
Humane World for Animals India highlighted the alarming statistics: approximately 58,000 annual deaths in India are attributed to venomous snakebites. Experts stress that with proper education, both human and ecological welfare can be safeguarded, while fostering a better coexistence with these reptiles.
