An Army sergeant named Quornelius Radford had opened fire on his fellow servicemembers at their workplace, the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion’s company operations facility. Five soldiers were shot; two remain hospitalized.
Staff Sgt. Aaron Turner, unarmed, tackled the assailant. Master Sgt. Justin Thomas also jumped on the shooter. Other soldiers rushed to stop bleeding. Arnold, who was in the hallway when the shooting started, recalled that his training had kicked in.
The suspect, Radford, was swiftly apprehended and remains in custody. Five victims survived but are expected to recover fully. Two women remain hospitalized at different medical facilities.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll traveled to Fort Stewart on August 7 to present medals to Taylor, Arnold, Turner, Thomas, and two other soldiers for their quick response that saved lives. They received the Meritorious Service Medal, a prestigious decoration rarely awarded to lower-ranking troops.
Driscoll emphasized that the soldiers’ medical aid was credited with saving some victims’ lives. He promised counseling and support services as needed.
Taylor returned home after the chaos on August 6 and focused on her family, making her children’s favorite dinner. As other survivors process the event, Driscoll assured the unit’s soldiers of ongoing support.
