Zelensky and Trump have had a complicated relationship, but it appears to be improving following their White House meeting in February. On Monday, Zelensky visited Washington after Trump returned from his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House has been cautious about pressuring Moscow into negotiations, but Trump is increasingly frustrated with the Kremlin. He floated the possibility of “massive sanctions or massive tariffs” on Russia if swift progress in a deal for Ukraine does not materialize.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for Trump’s “kind words for the Ukrainian people,” and praised the U.S. for standing alongside Ukraine to defend independence, freedom, and peace. Ukraine has celebrated its independence since 1991, following Kyiv’s declaration of independence from the former Soviet Union.
In a letter, Trump congratulated Zelensky on behalf of the “courageous people of Ukraine,” emphasizing that it was time to end senseless killings. Russia and Ukraine remain far apart in their demands for a peace settlement, particularly regarding territorial control and military capabilities. Moscow has resisted an in-person meeting between Putin and Zelensky, but Trump is preparing arrangements for such a conversation.
World leaders from various countries also extended their congratulations. The U.K.’s King Charles III expressed admiration for the Ukrainian people’s unbreakable courage and spirit. Chinese leader Xi Jinping said China and Ukraine enjoy a traditional friendship and extended his best wishes to Zelensky, emphasizing mutual respect and peace. Despite being a close ally of Russia, Beijing has publicly claimed neutrality in the conflict.
Zelensky shared messages from world leaders on social media, including Trump’s letter. He stated that by working together, they could end the war and achieve real peace for Ukraine. Trump emphasized U.S. support for a negotiated settlement that would safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed solidarity with Ukrainians in defending their freedom against Russian attacks. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine on Independence Day.
Trump is pushing for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin to discuss peace talks. The outcome remains uncertain, as both sides may be unwilling to make concessions, or the war could continue into the near future.
