Jake and Rebecca Haro, the parents of a missing baby named Emmanuel Haro, were arrested on August 22 for his murder. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) made the arrest at their residence in Cabazon.
According to the SBCSD, detectives from the Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Specialized Enforcement Division arrested Jake and Rebecca Haro for PC 187 – Murder. They are still searching for Emmanuel Haro as of the time of writing.
Rebecca Haro initially told police that her infant was kidnapped outside a retail store in Yucaipa, California, on August 14. However, investigators found inconsistencies in her statements.
The SBCSD confirmed that the arrests are linked to Emmanuel’s disappearance but declined to provide additional details at this time.
USA TODAY reached out to Rebecca and Jake Haro for comments prior to their arrest but was unable to reach them. It’s unclear whether they have retained legal counsel.
What Happened to 7-Month-Old Emmanuel Haro?
Rebecca Haro told local news outlets that the family was in Yucaipa for another child’s football practice when she went to a sporting goods store to buy a mouthguard. She said she realized her infant’s diaper needed changing and changed him outside her car.
She claimed a man assaulted her, knocking her unconscious. When she regained consciousness, Emmanuel was missing. Rebecca Haro showed signs of physical trauma during interviews with local TV stations, including a black eye from the alleged assault.
Police Continue to Investigate
The SBCSD conducted extensive searches in both Yucaipa and Cabazon and served several search warrants at the Haro home. They also utilized K9s (detection dogs) to aid in the investigation.
On August 20, Mara Rodriguez, public information officer for SBCSD, confirmed that investigators seized a car belonging to Jake Haro for evidence processing.
During interviews with investigators, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue. The case remains under active investigation.
