Despite not being a mainline game, Final Fantasy Tactics is still considered one of the best entries in the Square Enix franchise. The tactical role-playing game, originally released on the first PlayStation in 1997, features an excellent Job system that provides extensive character customization options and an engaging story rivaling some novels in terms of complexity. Therefore, a modern remaster was long overdue. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles has delivered, providing an improved version of Ramza Beoulve’s story.

During Gamescom last month, I played the game for about one hour before its September release. As soon as the classic intro played, I felt a strong wave of nostalgia, recalling my first experience with the game in 1998. The remaster now includes full voice acting that perfectly suits the new translation by Alexander O. Smith from the War of the Lions PSP and mobile releases.

I chose Enhanced Mode to experience the many improvements, which include better visuals, a new interface, and a modernized gameplay experience. Starting with the battle at Orbonne Monastery, the remaster was impressive. The new interface is both visually appealing and functional, with speed-up options that make battles more fluid. Voice acting was excellent, adding personality to even generic units, who grunt when attacking and shout incantations during special skills or spell casts.

Before my time ended, I played a memorable battle at Zeirchele Falls in Chapter 2. The battle was easy as expected, but the new script slightly altered one of Delita’s iconic lines (Blame yourself or God), though it improved the medieval flair of Ivalice.

With Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles announced earlier this year and now available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch on September 30, my excitement has soared. The game promises to be the ultimate way to experience Ramza’s journey in the War of the Lions.
