November 7, 2025, marks the first anniversary of the PS5 Pro’s launch and signals the midpoint of the PlayStation 5 generation. As we approach the end of the PS5’s lifecycle, Sony is reportedly considering a detachable disc drive for the upcoming PlayStation 6, according to Insider-Gaming.
The concept of a detachable disc drive is already familiar; it has been available since 2023 with the PS5 Slim model. This makes sense as Sony aims to maintain compatibility with its current manufacturing process. According to Insider-Gaming’s sources, PlayStation will sell the PS6 in two configurations: one with a pre-attached disc drive and another without, allowing users to purchase the drive separately if desired.
Additionally, the fact that PlayStation consoles now offer detachable drives suggests that Sony is gradually moving towards a digital-only future, though not immediately. The company isn’t ready for a fully digital console yet, as evidenced by rumors of an upcoming discless handheld device. For now, players who prefer physical discs still have that option.
While much of the information about PlayStation 6 remains speculative, these details provide insight into potential changes and enhancements in the next generation of consoles.
