In an interview on October 7 in the Oval Office, Trump responded to a reporter’s question by saying, “It depends on who we’re talking about. The Democrats have put a lot of people at risk and jeopardy, but it really depends on who you’re speaking about.”
Trump added: “For the most part, we’ll take care of our people. There are some people that don’t deserve to be taken care of in the same way.”
These remarks come as the White House claims that 750,000 furloughed employees may not be entitled to back pay upon their return, according to an administration official.
If the administration denies federal workers their pay, it could use this move to apply additional pressure on Democrats in Congress to join Republicans in funding the government. Democrats have pushed for health care policy changes in any funding bill to reopen the government.
