According to reports from The Washington Post and The New York Times, President Trump’s participation adds another layer of mystery to this already unusual meeting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered about 800 senior military leaders to convene at Quantico in northern Virginia. The Pentagon has declined to disclose the reason for this unexpected gathering.
The White House and Pentagon did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment.
A typical meeting with such high-ranking officials would be planned months ahead, causing disruption as these leaders scramble to attend on short notice. All senior officers at the rank of brigadier general and above must participate; around 800 fit this category according to the Congressional Research Service.
Hegseth is expected to discuss maintaining a “warrior ethos” throughout the military during this roughly one-hour event, as reported by Reuters.
