The Indian Army announced the successful culmination of Operation Vijay on July 26, 1999, after nearly three months of intense battle at high altitudes in Ladakh. This day is observed annually as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
President Murmu stated that this day symbolizes the extraordinary valor and courage of our jawans, whose dedication and supreme sacrifice will forever inspire citizens. The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, led tributes along with Prime Minister Modi at various events across the country, including at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.
More than 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the conflict, which began when Pakistani troops intruded into Indian territory. Modi highlighted that Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds the nation of the unparalleled courage and valour of its soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend India’s pride.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid glowing tributes to the military personnel who died in the line of duty, emphasizing their supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War as a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India remains forever indebted to their service.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan underscored that Kargil Vijay Diwas is not only about remembering the past but also drawing inspiration for the future, stating that the legacy of Kargil reminds us of our jointness, preparedness, and unwavering courage, which will always triumph over enemy deceit and aggression.
Gen Chauhan highlighted the bitter truth of Pakistan’s betrayal, citing the ploy to extend the conflict beyond the Great Himalayan Range by sending regular troops disguised as Mujahideens. In Drass, Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi emphasized India’s decisive victory through Operation Sindoor, ensuring no evil intention would be allowed inside its borders and maintaining the unity and integrity of India.
These events reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to upholding the principles established during the Kargil War and continued military preparedness.
