On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom, praising them as crucial connectors that strengthen ties between India and the UK. During a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he acknowledged their contributions beyond traditional sectors, emphasizing creativity, commitment, and character.
Modi highlighted the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), underscoring how the diaspora impacts cultural and economic links. Earlier in his two-day official visit to the UK, the much-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement was finalized, aimed at enhancing goods and services movement between the countries.
The session also introduced a Double Contribution Convention to boost service sector cooperation, particularly in technology and finance. Modi unveiled ‘Vision 2035’, a strategic plan that fosters collaboration across sectors like technology, defense, climate, education, and personal exchanges, projecting a roadmap for the coming decade.

New UK university campuses in India were announced, including the recent inauguration of the University of Southampton’s campus in Gurugram. Reflecting on cricket, Modi likened the sport to the India-UK partnership, stressing commitment to a high-scoring collaboration. He thanked the UK Prime Minister for their hospitality and invited him to visit India.
The transformative CETA is expected to unlock export opportunities, notably benefiting sectors like textiles, leather, and toys, creating employment and empowering various enterprises. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry noted unprecedented market access for Indian goods, promising zero-duty on 99 per cent of tariff lines.
