Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could be an appropriate location for discussions with US President Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a press conference, Putin stated that the Middle Eastern country “would be one of the more suitable locations” for talks.
This comes after Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, had a productive meeting with Putin earlier this week to discuss a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. The White House confirmed on Thursday that “no location has been determined yet,” and added that a potential meeting could occur as early as next week.
In response to the situation, President Trump threatened secondary sanctions against India unless Putin agreed to a truce by Friday. As part of this pressure, Trump imposed additional 25 percent tariffs on Indian oil imports, bringing the total tariff to 50 percent for the world’s second-largest purchaser of Russian oil, which funds Moscow’s aggressive actions.
Putin mentioned that Russia has many friends who could arrange such an event and that the UAE “could be one of the most suitable places.” During a meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Kremlin, Putin was asked about this potential summit by journalists. In response, he stated, “We have many friends who are ready to help us organize such an event. One of those friends is the president of the UAE. I think we’ll make a decision, but it would be one of the more suitable locations.”
The White House reiterated that no location has been decided and noted that a meeting could happen as early as next week.
Upcoming events include discussions about arranging the summit, with anticipation on whether Trump’s threat of secondary sanctions will compel Putin to negotiate.
