Given that Qualcomm’s current flagship chip is called the Snapdragon 8 Elite, it would make sense to name its successor the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 or 8 Elite 2. But according to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the actual name of the chipset designated as ‘SM8850’ will be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This sudden jump from the current version to the fifth generation is puzzling.

Additionally, Qualcomm plans to announce another chip in the near future: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The REDMAGIC 11 Pro was spotted on Geekbench 6 and tested with what appears to be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This SoC is expected to deliver lower performance but offer a more affordable option for Qualcomm’s partners.
