With the “Little Nightmares” series, Swedish development studio Tarsier Studios gained a foothold among survival horror fans with its unique blend of puzzle-solving and platforming elements. After leaving the franchise behind in late 2019 following an acquisition by Amplifier Game Invest, Tarsier Studios has now developed Reanimal—a survival horror game that reintroduces many of the series’ popular features, including co-op play.
Though not directly responding to Supermassive Games’ addition of co-op to Little Nightmares 3, Tarsier Studios has created a game where two players or one player with an AI-controlled partner navigate through a hellish version of their home. They must save three friends while traversing this dangerous world and solving puzzles that include activating various contraptions simultaneously, moving objects for platforms, and avoiding capture by large enemies.
The Gamescom demo showcased Reanimal’s co-op experience, highlighting its best moments during escape sequences where stealth and platforming were combined to evade a giant doll-like creature. These sequences were the most engaging parts of the short demo, even if the puzzles sometimes felt familiar due to the co-op approach.
Overall, what was seen at Gamescom suggests that Reanimal will carry Tarsier Studios’ trademark style when it launches next year for PC and consoles. While a 20-minute session isn’t enough to fully capture the game, fans of the series can expect an experience that stays true to its roots.
