The name RedOctane may sound familiar because it was once the studio that partnered with Harmonix to create the original Guitar Hero game in 2005, later releasing titles such as Guitar Hero II and eventually being acquired by Activision. Under Activision, RedOctane made games like Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour before facing layoffs in 2010 and shutting down.
Now, RedOctane Inc., reborn as RedOctane Games, is led by Simon Ebejer, who worked on the Guitar Hero series since Guitar Hero III. Charles and Kai Huang, the brothers behind the original RedOctane, remain involved and serve on the special advisory board of this new studio.
The team at RedOctane Games comprises both veteran talent from past rhythm games and emerging developers and community leaders. Their first title is set for release later in 2025, but they are currently working on a range of innovative rhythm-based experiences.
Ebejer stated in the press release that “rhythm games are about feel, flow, and connection to music and each other.” RedOctane Games aims to push the genre forward with new ideas. A blog post by Lee Guinchard explains that this game will not be like Guitar Hero or DJ Hero but a fresh creation built with community input.
It remains intriguing what RedOctane Games has in store, as rhythm games continue to play an important role in the video game industry despite changes in the market. We can hope for their debut title within 2025.
