The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with mini-LED technology are impressive, but it’s time for Apple to transition to the next big thing: OLEDs. According to recent reports, Samsung will start mass-producing these new displays after the second quarter of 2025. However, because manufacturing OLEDs is likely more expensive, Apple needs to reduce panel costs before launching the updated portable MacBooks.
Estimated OLED Production for New MacBook Pro Lineup Could Reach Up to 3 Million Units, Possibly Not Enough for Better Pricing
The redesigned MacBook Pro models are expected to retain their display sizes of 14 inches and 16 inches. Samsung is set to begin test production at its A6 line later this year, with mass production anticipated in the first quarter of 2026. An industry insider suggests that if Apple cannot bring down manufacturing costs, it might delay the MacBook Pro launch.
Current statistics show that Samsung produces between 2 and 3 million OLED screens annually. This limited production capacity may give Apple some leverage to negotiate lower prices but offers less flexibility than with its iPhones, which have millions of displays manufactured each year.
If the OLED MacBook Pro launch is delayed, it could also impact the unveiling of the OLED MacBook Air, previously scheduled for 2027 and now postponed until 2029.
For Samsung, the goal is to generate significant profits. In April 2023, the company announced a $4.1 billion investment in its A6 line by 2026, aiming to produce around 10 million units annually. This means Samsung needs additional customers besides Apple to transition to this advanced technology and ensure profitability.
