It appears Samsung may secure a significant chip order from Elon Musk and his company, xAI. This time, the order could be for xAI’s first Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip.
**Samsung Could Land Orders for xAI’s Custom-Built AI Chip, Considering the Firm’s Relations with Elon Musk**
The Korean tech giant has recently gained momentum in the chip industry due to its success in securing a $16.5 billion contract to produce Tesla’s AI6 chips. Additionally, Samsung managed to obtain orders for Apple’s advanced image sensors by manufacturing them in the US, demonstrating increased traction from external customers. According to a rumor from the Korean outlet BusinessPost, Samsung could be a candidate for producing xAI’s custom AI chips, given its reputation with the Tesla deal.
Samsung is pursuing ‘foundry revival,’ particularly focusing on 2nm production. The company has been steadily progressing with SF2 technologies and plans to introduce 2nm into the Taylor facility in upcoming years, showing a willingness to produce cutting-edge processes in the US. Elon Musk has shown an inclination towards Samsung Foundry and even claimed that the $16.5 billion Tesla deal is just an initial figure, with actual output being much higher.
Of course, this is merely a rumor for now, but it’s known that Musk is involved in plans to develop custom silicon. xAI recently opened up a job post for a custom silicon developer, indicating that an ASIC is underway. Whether Samsung manages to secure the order depends on how the 2nm process turns out, but after the Tesla deal, there is higher confidence towards the South Korean giant.
In summary, Samsung could indeed land orders for Elon Musk’s first custom AI chip, depending on the success of its 2nm production efforts.
