Ten people were injured, including two who died. One person was in critical condition while seven others were stable as of Sunday night. Sanford died after exchanging gunfire with responding officers in the church’s parking lot. Two bodies were found inside the charred remains of the chapel.
Law enforcement is working to find more victims and account for everyone present during the attack, as not all areas of the church have been cleared due to extensive damage from the fire. The entire community has expressed shock and disbelief over the incident.
Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, appears to have been a veteran with stints in Japan and Iraq after graduating from Goodrich High School in 2003. He was known for his hunting and fishing hobbies and had a son Brantlee who suffers from hyperinsulinism. A registered voter in Burton, Michigan, Sanford’s political views are unclear but he is seen wearing a camouflage Trump 2020 campaign shirt in a recent photo.
The investigation into this “act of targeted violence” continues as authorities seek to understand the motivations behind the attack.
