Vancouver-based game developer Blackbird Interactive has announced the acquisition of the Hardspace: Shipbreaker IP from Focus Entertainment. The original game was well-received upon its 2022 release and earned a 9/10 score on Wccftech, where reviewer Rosh Kelly noted:
“If you’re seeking a game to escape the daily grind of modern life, Hardspace offers an engaging experience with satisfying puzzles in procedurally generated ships. Whether you enjoy ambient country music reminiscent of Firefly or other science fiction frontier stories, dismantling unique and detailed ships, or battling a powerful corporation, Hardspace: Shipbreaker is a fantastic game worth completing within fifteen hours.”
Blackbird Interactive clearly sees potential for expansion through the IP. They have already announced that multiple games in the Hardspace: Shipbreaker franchise are in development.
Additionally, Blackbird Interactive has launched the LYNX Pioneer Program, which allows pre-registered users to gain exclusive early playtests of future projects, behind-the-scenes updates and access, and opportunities to influence BBI’s next generation of games. Pre-registration is open on the official website.
Founded by former Relic Entertainment developers, Blackbird Interactive has traditionally focused on strategy games such as Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Crossfire: Legion, and Homeworld 3. However, they have also found success with an unconventional action-adventure simulation game. One of these upcoming Hardspace projects could be a strategy game adaptation, which would be intriguing to see.
