Another instance where a user was able to achieve incredibly high scores with shunt modding on the RTX 5090, but this time without any liquid cooling. Redditor u/thatavidreaderture replaced 2MOhm resistors with 1MOhm ones on his GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5090 Aorus Master ICE to unlock twice the power limit for the GPU.
By default, the GPU can consume nearly 600W at full load, but shunt-mod allowed it to receive up to 1200W. Since he thinks the stock cooler is sufficient for the GPUs’ thermal requirements and most aftermarket coolers have enough headroom, u/thatavidreaderture also did a GPU repaste using PTM 7950 and Upsiren UX Ultra thermal putty.
With about 820W of power draw at max load, 3.2 GHz clock speed, and around 79 degrees Celsius temperature, the RTX 5090 was able to secure the number 9 spot in 3DMark Speedway with a score of 16,559 points (for Ryzen 9950X3D + RTX 5090 configuration). It also ranked 11th in Steel Nomad with 17,125 points and 15th in Port Royal with 43,378 points.
This is surprising as he is the only air-cooled RTX 5090 to achieve such high positions. This demonstrates that many aftermarket coolers are sufficient for GPUs’ thermal requirements. All in all, this is a good way to boost performance, but we don’t recommend it unless you’re willing to void your GPU warranty.
