Solidigm has introduced a unique external SSD called D7-PS1010 E1.S, which uses direct-to-chip liquid cooling instead of traditional fans for enhanced thermal management. This innovative cooling solution is particularly useful in servers where conventional airflow cooling isn’t practical.
**Solidigm Intros D7-PS1010 E1.S External SSD for Fanless Servers**
Enterprise data storage manufacturer Solidigm has unveiled its latest E1.S form factor SSD, the D7-PS1010. This device is designed to offer superior cooling without fans, making it ideal for dense AI environments where space and power efficiency are critical.
**Innovative Cooling Design**
The D7-PS1010 utilizes direct-to-chip liquid cooling through a cold plate that directly contacts the SSD chips. This single-sided design cools both sides of the components efficiently, providing superior thermal management without the need for fans. For enterprise servers, this is essential because traditional fan cooling methods can be impractical due to limited space and increased power consumption.
**Benefits and Applications**
With the D7-PS1010, servers can achieve better efficiency while maintaining optimal cooling performance. This design allows for more GPUs or SSDs per rack by saving space and improving power efficiency. Solidigm targets AI and GPU-heavy servers as well as hyperscale data centers where space, power efficiency, and density are crucial.
**Technical Details**
The D7-PS1010 is available in 9.5mm and 15mm thickness options with capacities of 3.84 TB and 7.68 TB. It supports the PCIe 5.0 interface and offers “best-in-class” 4-corners storage performance compared to other E1.S Gen 5 SSDs.
**Collaborations**
Solidigm has partnered with various server Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to qualify its SSDs on recommended vendor lists. Supermicro, for instance, is collaborating with Solidigm on their E1.S form factor Cold-Plate-Cooled eSSD technology.
**Supermicro Collaboration**
According to Vik Malyala, MD Europe, Senior Vice President of Technology and AI at Supermicro: “We are excited to collaborate with Solidigm on their E1.S form factor Cold-Plate-Cooled eSSD technology. Their innovative SSDs can be utilized in some of the most advanced liquid-cooled architectures, including the Supermicro NVIDIA HGX B300-based GPU servers supporting compute-intensive workloads.”
