Earlier today, Sony announced Q1 2025 financial results, revealing that the PlayStation 5 had shipped 80.3 million units by June. The Game and Network Services (G&NS) segment saw a 8% year-on-year increase in sales of 936.5 billion yen ($6.35 billion), driven primarily by third-party software sales growth, which was slightly offset by foreign exchange rate impacts.
As user engagement continued to rise, Sony revised its fiscal year 2025 forecast for sales upwards from the previous estimate to 4 trillion 320 billion yen ($29.31 billion) and adjusted the operating income forecast by 4% to 500 billion yen ($3.39 billion). In June, the number of monthly active users (MAUs) across PlayStation increased by 6% from the same month last year, reaching 123 million accounts. Total playtime for the quarter also rose by 6% compared to the previous year.
Notably, operating income surged approximately 2.3 times year-on-year to a new quarterly high of 148 billion yen ($1 billion). This growth was attributed to increased third-party software sales and an uptick in network services revenue.
During subsequent investor Q&A, Sadahiko Hayakawa, Senior Vice President in charge of Finance and IR at Sony, stated: “In the gaming business, we are moving away from a hardware-centric model toward a platform business that expands our community and increases engagement.”
This shift aligns with recent job listings for a Senior Director of Multiplatform & Account Management, hinting that Sony aims to bring more games not only to PC but also to Xbox and Nintendo platforms. Previously, it was believed this might be limited to live service games like Helldivers 2, but no such limitations were mentioned this time.
If confirmed, this business shift would signify the end of the console wars, with Nintendo being the sole company continuing to produce first-party games for its own consoles.
