Microsoft has been subtly promoting Microsoft Edge over Chrome and sometimes issuing overt warnings to gain more control over the browser market. Recently, the tech giant issued a new warning to Windows users who want to install Google’s Chrome browser, urging them to stick with the secure alternative, Microsoft Edge.
**Microsoft Urges Windows Users to Ditch Google Chrome in Favor of Edge, Citing Security and Trust Advantages**
According to Forbes, Microsoft is now warning Windows users to stop using Google Chrome and instead choose Microsoft Edge for a more secure browsing experience. When you attempt to install Chrome, a message pops up advising:
“Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft.”
This is not the first time Microsoft has discouraged the use of Chrome; it has been pushing users towards Edge for some time. However, this latest warning is more direct and appears when you are trying to switch browsers, not just in ads or indirectly.
As Microsoft and Google compete in the browser space, with Chrome currently dominating, this move aims to win back market share. From a technical perspective, both browsers have similar performance characteristics, but Edge has tighter integrations with Windows and greater security due to its own infrastructure.
Microsoft’s tactic is controversial, as critics argue it is anti-competitive. These prompts appear right when users are about to switch browsers, and while users can ignore them and install Chrome, the warning of a less secure browser may keep some in Edge.
This marks another chapter in the browser wars, now focusing on fighting for users’ trust rather than performance, which is currently more valuable.
