The Philippine Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte violated the constitution, thereby blocking her trial. This decision came after the House of Representatives improperly filed multiple impeachment cases within a year, according to court spokesperson Camille Ting.

Vice President Duterte faced impeachment over serious allegations including threatening to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his relatives, and involvement in several criminal activities. The Supreme Court emphasized its role in enforcing legality, stating, “Our duty is to ensure that politics operate within the framework of just law.”

The impeachment case arose from Duterte’s resignation from a Cabinet post amid accusations of corruption and weak leadership, which strained her political alliance with Marcos. Despite claiming that her threatening remarks were misinterpreted and later clarifying them, the controversy led to heightened national security concerns and protests demanding her trial.

In a unique start to his ruling against President Donald Trump’s administration on September 30, U.S. District Court Judge William Young included a scanned handwritten note sent to his office. The note read: “Trump has pardons and tanks – what do you have?” At the top of Young’s opinion in AAUP v. Rubio, which ruled that Trump’s effort to deport foreign-born student protesters was unconstitutional.
