Eight victims were hospitalized; one is in critical condition while seven are stable. Sanford used gasoline as an accelerant to set the church on fire before exchanging gunfire with responding officers in the parking lot.
Sanford’s hometown is about eight miles north of Grand Blanc. He went by “Jake” and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving from 2004 to 2008. His military career was described as “stellar,” with honors earned on the rifle range and service in Okinawa, Japan, and Fallujah, Iraq.
Sanford was also an avid hunter and fisherman, known for his deer and ice fishing photos posted online. He had a son named Brantlee who was born with hyperinulinism, a rare condition that led to multiple medical challenges before a diagnosis at Cook Children’s Hospital in Texas.
Sanford wore a Donald Trump 2020 campaign shirt in a photo from his son’s medical journey, and there is a “Trump-Pence” yard sign at his home. The FBI is seeking any information that may help solve the case.
